Wolves News · March Spotlight: Gator’s Student Athletes of the Month

The Timber Creek Athletic Department would like to recognize and congratulate senior, Austin Thompson and sophomore, Gabriela Valle on being voted as our Male and Female Gator’s Student Athlete of the Month for March. They both exemplified what it is to be a true “Student Athlete” on the field and in the classroom with their hard work, sportmanship and teamwork.

Male Gator’s Student Athlete of the Month
Austin Thompson (Sr)
Boys Varsity Track & Field
Events: Pole Vault & Long Jump
Austin was nominated by Coach Salazaar. Austin has been at the top of the rankings for the state throughout the month of March in Pole Vault and Long Jump.  He set the school record in the long jump in his first competition at the long jump during the Brian Jaegar Elite Classic by jumping 22’10” and he continued to improve the record by hitting the mark of 23’1.5″ at the Florida Pepsi Relays this past weekend.  In the month of March, Austin raised his own school record by vaulting a phenomenal 15’5″.  Austin will be one of the most important pieces to the team heading into their postseason as well as be a vital part in winning Metros and Districts in the upcoming weeks.
Austin has been competing in track for the last 3 years. He started out with pole vaulting and most recently found a niche for the long jump – breaking school records. Austin also played basketball from 1st to 10th grade and tried lacrosse out during his sophomore year at TC. Austin has committed to the University of North Florida and plans to go to law school after he receives his bachelors degree. He is also looking to try and compete for Jamaica in the 2020 Olympics. When asked what his future plans were, Austin commented, “I plan to coach my children from a young age in pole vault to give them the advantage that I didn’t have”.  A little fun fact about Austin is that he likes to keep at least one headphone in his ear when he’s walking around because it hurts his head when he’s not listening to music.
Austin is certainly a product of hard work and determination. He finished district champion in both pole vault and long and qualified for the regional meet next week. We are super proud of Austin and wish him the best at regionals!

Female Student Athlete of the Month
Gabriela Valle (So)
Girls Varsity Lacrosse
Position: Midfielder
Gabriela was nominated by Coach Durden for her outstanding play and hard work in the month of March. She tallied 36 goals and 3 assistants and has been working extremely hard at every practice and game. She continues to hustle and even works on herself outside of practice time. She is involved in SGA and in the BETA Club, volunteering and working on community/school projects, outside of athletics. Gabriel also maintains above a 3.7 GPA while taking multiple Honors courses.

Gabriela has been playing lacrosse for the last 5 years. She also cheered for two seasons at Timber Creek but has been mainly focusing on lacrosse. She is hoping to get recruited and continue to play at the college level. She is only a sophomore and is undecided about what degree she wants to pursue but she has an interest in studying abroad in Italy.  A little fun fact about Gabriela is that her nickname is “Shrimp” and has two middle names – Isabela Candela.

We are super proud of Gabriela and look forward to her continued success at Timber Creek and in the future. The best of luck to her and the Timber Creek Girls Lacrosse team in the upcoming district playoffs!
